One popular card game is Texas Hold’em poker, which is popularly known as ‘flop’. This game combines the characteristics of stud and draw poker and is the most challenging of flop poker games. Players here vie to win the pot, which is the total amount of bets placed in a course of a hand in each hand of the game. However the aim of the game is to win money and not pots, proving that there is a difference between the two.

A game is started with two face-down cards, called pocket cards. On receiving these cards, additional cards are placed face up on the table by the dealer to make the ‘board’. These cards are called community cards, which can be used by any player to combine with their pocket cards to from a betting hand.

Dealing the board involves three stages; however not all hands will reach the last stage. After a round of betting, the dealer lays down three face up cards, the flop, in the first stage. A fourth card or the ‘turn’ is laid down after a second round of betting while the last card or the ‘river’ is laid down after another round of betting. With this, there is a final round of betting.

It is by combining the pocket cards with some community cards that the players try to create the best hand possible to win the pot. Basically, no suit has more value than the other in Texas Hold’em while the ace can be a high or low card. However if it is used as a single card or kicker, it is always high.

The hand rankings for Texas Hold’em in descending order are:

• Straight flush has 5 cards of the same suit in a sequential order where the royal flush of 10, J, Q, K, A is the highest hand.
• Four of a kind means four cards of the same rank.
• Full house is a combination of three of a kind, and a pair in a hand.
• Flush indicates five cards of the same suit.
• Straight is five cards in different suits of sequential order.
• Three of a kind, set or trips indicate three cards of the same rank.
• Two pair where there are two cards of a rank with two cards of a different rank.
• Pair with two cards of similar ranking.
• High card is a single card with the highest face value in the hand.

Basically, the more the number of cards used in Texas Hold’em, the better is the option to form a hand.
